Pack Lightly is a free travel planning platform that takes you from a vague travel idea to a day-by-day itinerary, a smart packing and prep checklist, and a live travel journal, all in a single app. It's built for independent and solo travelers who want a strong, opinionated starting point without spending hours cross-referencing blogs, maps and booking sites.

What it does

• Trip planner. Pick a destination (146 countries supported, 131 with rich curated place data) and Pack Lightly assembles a realistic, route-aware itinerary. A deterministic route engine sequences your stops geographically, respects travel corridors, real border distances and transport modes (road vs. flight), and avoids the "94 km side-trip in the middle of the day" mistakes that generic AI planners make. Every day is fully editable: drag stops between days, add your own places, and keep an ideas bucket for maybes.
• AI travel assistant. A conversational assistant interviews you about your trip, answers destination questions grounded in verified data, and can build or adjust your route. Answers stay honest: maps, prices and internal links are always fact-checked, so you never get invented POIs.
• Prep checklist. A dated, country-aware checklist covering packing, visas, plugs and adapters, vaccinations, money and arrival logistics. Packing items link straight to Amazon and bol.com so you can buy what you're missing.
• Trip tracker. A Polarsteps-style journal to log your journey as you go, with photos, video, voice memos and a personal world map of where you've been.
• Live destination context. Each place shows real-time weather, sun and golden-hour times, sea and tide conditions for coastal spots, seasonal snow, local holidays and festivals, remote-work/nomad info, and interactive maps. Data comes from free, keyless sources (Open-Meteo, MapTiler, OSRM, OpenStreetMap), so the experience is fast and privacy-respecting.
• Social layer. Traveler profiles, a public library of shared trips you can copy, per-place and per-country chat, direct messages, spontaneous local meetups, first-party reviews, follows and light gamification, all moderated.

Why it was built

Most trip planning is fragmented: one tab for the route, one for the weather, one for visas, one for packing, one for booking. Generic AI itinerary tools produce plausible-looking plans that fall apart on the ground because they ignore geography, transport reality and seasonality. Pack Lightly was built to close that gap, a single tool that gives you a credible, editable draft in seconds and surrounds it with the real-world data and community you actually need to travel. The philosophy is "a smart starting point, then make it yours": strong defaults, heavy editability, and verified information over confident guesses.
